Proud of the NHS At 60 Years Old, the NHS is looking to the future
July 2008 - Ealing Times article

My parents’ first son was born and died in 1946, their second in 1947 and I was born with the NHS in July 1948. Sometimes we take this amazing institution for granted but to many people the NHS was – and is – the difference between life and death.

This month we celebrated the 60th.birthday of the NHS and for me a great present would be the introduction of polyclinics across the capital and the country.

Ealing Town Hall The Future of Shopping in Ealing
30 June 2008 - Local news - Gazette article

1. What do you think of the Dickens Yard proposals, and what is the best way forward for development in the borough?

Dickens Yard isn’t in my Ealing North constituency but the commercial viability of Ealing as a shopping centre is an issue close to my heart and I support the principle of town centre regeneration while having severe concerns about the impact of the development on the surrounding residential streets and, especially, Christ Church School. Negotiation is needed!...

42-days
16 June 2008 - National news

Why I voted for 42-days...

A number of people have written to me on the issue of the 42-day detention and I value the opinion of those who have contacted me on the subject, but am in an absolute quandry over this issue.

I certainly wouldn't have voted for the original proposition but a reserve power subject to approval of the DPP and affirmative votes in Parliament seems a fair compromise between the priorities of the individual and the state.

Golden Dagger Awards 2008
9 June 2008 - Local news

For the past six months, Steve has been reading crime novels at a rate of knots after being enlisted for the panel to decide the winners of this year's Duncan Lawrie Dagger awards.

The books have now been shortlisted and Steve has a warehouse full of crime fiction, which he is looking to pass on to those who share his interest in murder mysteries, back-stabbing and late nights with a nice thick novel to get into.

So, if you live in Ealing North, would be interested in one of the books from the reading list and would be prepared to donate a few pounds to charity, then please e-mail Steve on pounds@parliament.uk

It's first come, first served, so check out the reading list and e-mail as soon as possible.

Philip Dunne, Tory MP Tory MP claims too much money is spent on schools in Ealing
3 June 2008 - National News

Tory frontbencher and Ludlow MP Philip Dunne has attacked the government for spending £5,280 per pupil per year in Ealing South Gloucestershire kids get £3,860.

Ealing North MP Steve Pound said “Philip Dunne shows a woeful ignorance and it is a pity that a bit more wasn’t spent on his education. He tries to imply that there is some political motivation behind the generous support that the government gives Ealing but can’t see that this is a Labour Government working with a Tory Council in the best interests of Ealing schools.

Surely no-one could deny that the needs of a West London borough like Ealing are far greater than those in rural Gloucestershire and his partisan comments on the front page of Monday’s “Daily Telegraph” do no favours to his Conservative colleagues in Ealing or to anyone who actually cares about education in our part of the world. When a senior Tory says we are spending too much on educating our pupils then I dread to think what their policies will be when they are finally revealed”.

A Week in London's Fast Lane
June 2008 - Ealing Times Article

Whichever way you slice it you have to accept that driving in this city of ours will never be a pleasure again.

Even before the current price horrors inflicted on us by the oil producing nations it was becoming painful to drive round London and I found myself getting more and more short tempered and angry.

This week I decided to do without the car.

Ealing Gazette 9th May 2008 Steve Speaks Out to Save Perivale Playing Fields
9 May 2008 - Ealing Gazette Article

This week's Greenford and Northolt Gazette reports on Steve's bid to save Perivale' popular laying fields from being built over. Ealing Central Sports Ground on Perivale's Horsenden Lane South is the proposed site for the council to build a new High School in the north of the borough.

Steve has supported the building of a new High School in the north of the borough, but has made it clear that this is not a suitable location for the building and is supported by many local residents. Speaking to the Gazette this week he said, "I accept there's a need for a new school, but this is simply the wrong place and there are other alternatives. I want the countil to go back to the drawing board and negotiate over the Glaxo site. They're taking the easy option because they own this piece of land they want to build on."

Civil Liberties Vs Civil Defence
April 2008 - Ealing Times Article

I’m naturally inclined to support the Police when they ask for a change in the law to enable them to do their job but I have to admit to some pretty serious doubts about the proposal to increase the period in which a terrorist suspect can be held without charge from 28 days to 42.

The counter-terrorism argument is fairly straightforward. The incredible complexity of modern investigations can require the translation and de-encryption of thousands of data sources (as after the July 7th.bomings) or involve enquiries on three continents (as in the case of the atrocity that was prevented in London by the car being towed away before its contents could be detonated).

How Lucky We Are
March 2008 - Ealing Times Article

Sometimes we just don’t know how lucky we are.

I was in Hyderabad looking at one of the local programmes supported by our Department for International Development and I called in at the Don Bosco Navajeevan – a home for abandoned and destitute boys.

The boys are thrown out by their parents or are simply found wandering the streets or hanging around the railway station. In the last month before my visit they had admitted 288 boys, 15 aged under five, 6 between six and ten, 245 between 11 and 15 and 21 under 21.
