Fairview & Racecourse Estate Residents victory over Eastcote Lane crossing 25th January 2003 For years residents have been asking for safety on the Fairview Estate as they negotiate across a busy stretch of Eastcote Lane. Now after pressure from the local Labour party there is success! Finally a victory! MP Steve Pound, Cllr Dave Bond and local Labour party Secretary Bassam Mahfouz gave an assurance to local residents in the last edition of UB5 that they would put the council's money where their mouths were and ensure that despite local Tories failing to make any impact on the matter. At this month's Northolt Area Committee it was revealed that the money has now been found to complete the conversion of the traffic island into a zebra crossing, making it infinitely safer for local residents to cross at this dangerous section of road. The works will be carried out in March as it is converted into a zebra crossing. Northolt resident Bassam Mahfouz said, "For the past few years I have been fighting for the money to ensure that this goal for local residents has become reality. Now the elderly and young residents alike who had been telling me about the seriousness of the problem can see their years of work have paid off." Cllr Bond, Chair of the Northolt Area Committee said, despite the local Tories not working to win this crossing, Labour has managed to press for the change and we are delivering on our promises." Local Labour MP Steve Pound was delighted to hear the news who said, "This is great news for local residents and a tribute to all those who campaigned so hard for many years. I had been bombarded with e-mails, letters, faxes and phone calls on the matter from local residents and Bassam Mahfouz, this result has been a real team effort and I am delighted that the hard-working people of the area are getting what they deserve." |
