About Steve PoundFull name: Stephen Pelham Pound Date of birth: 3 July 1948 Place of birth: Hammersmith Family: Married with one son and daughter Member of: Fabian Society and the Co-operative Party Main Hobbies & Pursuits: Fulham FC, comics, walking, lay reader at church (RC). Main political interests: Housing, transport, town planning, Ireland and Europe Steve Pound was elected as MP for Ealing North in May l997. Before entering the Commons he was Area Housing Manager of Paddington Churches Housing Association He has had a varied career including working as a seaman, bus conductor and hospital porter. As a mature student, he went to the London School of Economics and obtained a BSc (Econ) and spent a year as Student Union President. From 1982 to 1998 he was a Councillor at the London Borough of Ealing. He was also the Mayor of Ealing from 1995-96 As the MP for Ealing North, working for his constituents is his main priority and he has built up very close links with the local community through working as a Councillor and now as the MP. Steve is an active Parliamentarian and his main interest areas are housing, Europe, Ireland, transport and local government. He was a member of the Greater London Authority Select Committee and gave his maiden speech on the bill. He is also a member of the following Parliamentary Committees and Groups * Northern Ireland Affairs Committee * Homelessness & Housing Need * Parliamentary Motorcycle Group * Co-Chair of the All Party Scouting Group * Vice Chair of the British/ Polish Parliamentary Group * Former Chair, Labour Friends of India Parliamentary Group He is a postgraduate member of the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme (Navy) which gives MPs experience of service life, to enable them to speak on defence matters with some knowledge. He also served on the standing committee looking at the Police (Northern Ireland) Bill He writes a monthly column for the Ealing Times and used to write regular columns for the Ealing Gazette and Asian Voice. Steve has made numerous appearances on TV and radio, including "Have I Got News for You". He presented LBC's "London Matters" on Sunday mornings for six months and he was nominated in 2000 as Parliamentarian of the Year, in the Channel 4 Parliamentary Awards Steve lives in the constituency with his wife and two children. He is a life long supporter of Fulham Football Club and his other interests include enjoying music and collecting comics. Steve is Parliamentary Private Secretary to Minister Stephen Timms at the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform. |
