May 2006 - Gazette Article By the time you read this the 2006 Council Elections will be a memory and the polling booths will have been collapsed again. Many of the candidates will also be in a state of collapse but for the winners the work will be starting today. Whatever the result is a few things are certain. Some familiar faces will be leaving the Council by their own decision. In Ealing North we have had to say goodbye to Steve Sears who represented Hobbayne (and Costons before that) so well. Steve managed to build up a socially responsible “not for profit company” while, with Carol, being a pillar of the Hanwell Methodist Church and raising three very bright daughters. In Greenford Broadway we’ll miss Jill Stokoe; who was a terrific Councillor. No-one could have worked harder than Jill and she wore herself into the ground for the people of Greenford. I know how much gratitude there is and hope that Jill manages a brief rest before taking on her next challenge. It’s all change in North Greenford where Shital Manro, Richard Porter and Fred Varley aren’t standing this time.Shital has been a high profile member of the council while being a successful businessman and a good friend. Fred Varley has a long and proud political history and a deep affection for his home community and for North Greenford United FC. He and Ruth have hardly had a day off in years and he has certainly earned a rest - but I know that he’ll always be there to raise local concerns and to share his comprehensive knowledge of North Greenford. Mark Karasinski and Inderjeet Nijar will not be seeking election in Perivale and Mark has decided to follow his heart, and a very beautiful woman, back to Poland. Glenn Murphy isn’t standing in Mandeville and although we were fairly robust in our political differences I never had anything less than respect for this hyper-active councillor and I wish him well for the future. I would rather lose an arm than lose Dave Bond as a councillor but I’m afraid that he has made his decision. Dave was quite simply the best Councillor I ever worked with and one of the great Northolt characters. I know how fed up Eileen has been with the non-stop stream of callers to their home and how difficult it has been for Dave to be a full time cab driver, a wonderful councillor and a great father to Debbie and Clare and grandfather to Tia and those two fine young football stars of the future; Dale and Toby. Anyone who thinks for a moment that people go into politics for what they can get out of it should spend five minutes with Dave. He is a man who has given himself heart and soul to the hard task of representing the people of Northolt West End and it has nearly put him in his grave. Politicians usually get a bad press and often deserve it. As long as there are people like Dave Bond I can say with justification that politics is an honourable profession. Thanks, Dave, and thanks to all those who have tried to make our part of the world a better place. |
