Rectory Park Carnival Time...
This Time it's back in Northolt

August 2003

This has been a great Carnival season.

The Hanwell Carnival was a brilliant success and this year’s Party in the (Pitshanger) Park was easily the best yet.

The Greenford Carnival was superb – and on one of the hottest days of the year (so far!).

Perivale has the annual Fireworks display that was breathtaking last November and promises to be even better this Autumn – especially now the parking problem looks to have been seen to.

So what’s missing?

Northolt, that’s what!

There used to be a Northolt Festival organised on Rectory Park by, in the main, Viv Hosking and the Viking Community Centre team. About ten years ago the organisers felt so let down by the lack of community support and involvement that they pulled the plug. Needless to say scores of people said how much they missed the Northolt Carnival but wouldn’t lift a hand to help organise one. Well – the Northolt Festival has been reborn as the Northolt Carnival and you can be there on Saturday 6th.September in Rectory Park from 12.00pm.

Just when I despair that community-minded people have vanished from the face of the earth a few heroes and heroines turn up to save the day. In the case of the Northolt Carnival it is Satnam Loyal, Howard Speakmaster and Phil Simson who have dedicated themselves to the project for over a year and who stand to see their labours come to fruition on September 12th.

Our popular new Mayor of Ealing, Councillor Gurcharan Singh, will be there to do the honours at the opening with Cllr.Yvonne Johnson, who has been simply superb in organising the support and financial assistance of the local authority. Yvonne has been such a great supporter of the Northolt Carnival, and of community centres and services throughout the borough, that she is already known as the Carnival Queen.

In these days of cynicism about local government it has been an eye-opener to see the sheer effort and professionalism of Julian Rudd of Ealing Council. He has negotiated with the fairground operators, sorted out the fireworks display and made all the arrangements for the thousand and one complications that arise when an event of this size is arranged.

It is an absolute tragedy that some little so-and- sos chose to wreck his motorbike while he was on a walk-about with the Carnival team at Rectory Park on the 31st.July. I hope that they can live with their consciences, and if I get my hands on them that will be the least of their problems!

Mr.Northolt himself, Cllr.Dave Bond, will be there on the 6th.September.

You will be able to spot him by his distinctive uniform of Brentford top and lager can There are going to be five a side football tournaments, featuring the mighty Northolt Eagles, song, dance and the promotion of local musical talent.

You can be sure of an excellent choice of food and other stalls and there may just possibly be a beer tent (Don’t worry – there will be one!).

All in all this is a great opportunity to enjoy a real day out and to raise money for Greenford, Northolt and Perivale Age Concern. Come along to the first of what I hope will be many Northolt Carnivals. Without your support there certainly won’t be another one – and that would be a tragedy.
